Will your company remain relevant in the next years? Take a look at these current workplace trends to see if you’re measuring up.

Current workplace trends can either be hindrances or opportunities to company growth. Knowing what’s hot in business is the first step towards determining if you’re going to follow, ignore or innovate. Here are the latest developments in business that would help you prepare and plan your next steps.

Telecommuting

More employees will opt to and be encouraged to work from home as workers become more mobile-ready and tech-capable. Allowing workers to telecommute has many benefits – you’ll reduce amount of needed office space, save valuable time as employees won’t need to commute, and decrease travel expenses with low-cost video and web conferencing.

Automation

There’s no doubt that automation is transforming the way you do your work. There’s increasing emphasis on efficiency, collaboration, multi-tasking, and customer engagement.

Outsourcing

Companies don’t need to be limited to hiring native talent. Outsourced and skilled workers can be hired online to accomplish routine or specialized tasks. Most start-ups or non-profits won’t have the resources to hire internally, making outsourcing the most viable and wise option. If your current employees don’t have the capability or the time to handle certain projects, consider outsourcing.

Increasing mobile usage

It doesn’t take a genius to see that the world is rapidly becoming mobile. According to latest statistics, 3.010 are active internet users, 3.649 billion are unique mobile users, 2.078 billion have active social media accounts, and 1.685 billion have active social mobile accounts. These are out of a total population of 7.210 billion worldwide. With this trend, business transactions, shopping choices, and job applications are also going the way of mobile.

More millennials in leadership roles

Dan Schawbel over at Forbes notes that more and more of Gen Y or millennials have been placed in manager positions and the trend is expected to continue well into 2015. Says Schawbel, 27 per cent of millennials are already managers and 5 per cent are in senior management. In Ernst & Young, 59 per cent of millennials are managers. While millennials are young and may not have the wisdom of the older generations, research has also found that they possess certain key business skills such as adaptability, creativity, and tech-savviness that make them competitive in the current business landscape.

Emphasis on corporate social responsibility

Do you have room for do-good projects in your company? CSR is the new parameter that companies will be judged, according to SIOP. Customers will make purchasing decisions based on how a company gives back to local and global communities.

Social media as a hiring tool and parameter

Hiring managers are increasingly looking into potential employees’ social media accounts to make hiring decisions. How you project yourself in social media says a lot about you, so better keep those public posts professional. In addition, HR managers are also using social platforms such as LinkedIn to look for candidates.

More job searches

With Internet and emerging technology, the world is a wide-open space for new job opportunities. You can expect people getting more restless at work as they recognize the prospects outside their present companies. The challenge for businesses is how to keep key employees.

Widening skills gap

Online, technology, and marketing skills are just some of the most highly prized competencies at present. Unfortunately, the college curriculum still leaves much to be desired. Just last October 2014, National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) released a report saying that Australia’s training system isn’t meeting the skills demanded by employers.

Growing concern on work-life balance

With automation, social media, telecommuting, and mobile trends, it’s increasingly hard to put the boundaries between work and personal life. More technology will thus be designed to improve work-life balance.
