Documents show customs and border agents have been told to ask immigrant prisoners in their care about whether they’re eligible to apply for protection from deportation under the executive order Obama issued last year.
They are also being told to assess whether people they encounter in their other duties might qualify.
Training materials obtained by The Associated Press instruct Customs and Border Protection agents “to immediately begin identifying persons in their custody, as well as newly encountered persons” who might be eligible.
The actions could speed identification of up to 4 million people who might benefit.
Obama ordered the deferred action from deportation after Congress failed to clear a comprehensive immigration bill he supported.
Having the feds spread the word about the benefit is a switch from the usual protocol, where it is up to immigrants and their attorneys to apply for relief.
