Not all of us are morning persons, but seeing
the world’s most successful people’s morning schedule can be a genuine booster.
The days of the people we admire may begin with a steamy cup of coffee, but
what follows is what differentiates them from the rest of the world. According
to Fast Company, the first hour of the workday goes a bit differently
for motivational speaker Tony Robbins, Tumblr’s David Karp, career writer Brian Tracy and
Craigslist’s Craig Newmark. Here are some of the first things on their daily
to-do list.
Do not check your email
Checking e-mail as soon as your workday begins has become an automatism,
but what triggered it should also help you shut it off. According to an Inc.com
profile, David Karp, founder of Tumblr will “try hard” not to check his email
until 9.30 or 10 a.m. He believes that if there is an urgent matter, “someone
will call or text me.”
Be grateful
Self-help guru Tony Robbins indicates setting up half an hour or at least
15 minutes to think of everything you are grateful for is extremely important.
Working on Robbins’ plan is something many successful people do, so ending up
listening to his free audio stream might not be such a bad thing, after all.
Do the shoulder-sagging things first
Brian Tracy’s Eat That Frog!book was translated into 23 languages
and over 450,000 copies were sold, so trust him when he says it’s better to
learn to focus on the most important tasks and make sure they get done before
other less important tasks seize your day.
Choose your most demanding task
According to Fast Company tech writer Gina Trapani, you have to
“choose your frog, and write it down on a piece of paper” that you will see the
next morning. If it’s possible, do a little research and “gather together the
material you’ll need to get it done.”
Feel fulfilled at work
The late Steve
Jobs told a graduating class at Stanford a story
about his habits, which involved looking in the mirror every morning and asking
himself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am
about to do today?”
Try asking yourself this question and if “no” is the answer for too many
days in the row, it is time for a change.
“Customer Service”
Craigslist’s founder has a simple answer for all the people who wish to
change their priorities in the first work hour: customer service,Fast
Companyreports. Responding to user complaints and getting rid of spammers
and scammers is something which anchors him “to reality.”
Your version of “customer service” could be checking in with some
co-workers, keeping in touch with contacts, asking questions and generally
handling the human side of work.
Plan and strategize
Finally, one thing successful people do in their first work hour is to plan
their entire day, prioritize and strategize. It is easier to deal with the
daily tasks even if you choose not to follow Tracy’s pieces of advice and start
your day with the most demanding and challenging task.
