Some would say that successful people are a
different breed and should not be put in the same boat with average people, but
in reality, their only advantage is that they do all the things unsuccessful
people don’t want to do, as billionaire John Paul DeJoria says.
There is no such thing as a recipe for success, but prosperity is most often attained by those who “don’t know that
failure is inevitable,” fashion designer Coco Chanel once opined. Each
entrepreneur has an ace in the hole which he never divulges, but studies give
away their best-kept secret: that morning people are more proactive and
productive, Inc. Magazine writes. Still, it is not about what to do, but
about what NOT to do.
We know that highly successful people rise early and create goals, but what
is it exactly that they don’t do in the morning?
Sleep until noon
They may be successful and they may be rich, but people who have become
somebody understand that waking up before 8 AM helps them map out the entire
day. Laura Vanderkam, time management expert and author of What the Most
Successful People Do Before Breakfast believes that “if it has to happen,
then it has to happen first.” Time is a precious commodity for highly
successful people, so they prefer to squeeze out as much time as they can to
enjoy some moments alone before a new workday starts.
Laze in bed
Successful people wake up early and exercise before tasks seize their day.
According to Ms Vanderkam, a pre-breakfast workout helps counteract the effects
of a high-fat diet, reduces stress later in the day and improves sleep.
Waste time with trivial tasks
More often than not, morning people use the quiet hours of the morning to
their advantage. Successful people hate wasting their mornings, so when the
entire house finally wakes up, they have already finished an important project,
discussed new deals and completed takeovers. Think of each morning as project
time and choose a task that has your full attention before your nose smells the
steamy coffee.
Change habits
Habits are called this way for a reason, so wasting the morning deciding
what to do first is not something a successful person would do. Instead, find
out what you like to do in the morning and make it a habit. Whether you enjoy
researching, writing, responding to emails or reading the newspaper, the key is
NOT to change habits.
Ignore their loved ones
Success walks hand in hand with perseverance, so it comes as no surprise that
successful people don’t have time to waste. Still, investing in family time is
as important as mapping out the day, because cooking breakfast together,
helping children get dressed or enjoying a pleasant conversation is the best
way to start the day.
Avoid networking breakfasts
What would you choose between a midday lunch with a co-worker or
prospective client or a cup of coffee early in the morning with a partner or
even with the whole office? Although there is no such thing as a wrong answer,
the second option is preferred by successful people because they can socialize
better while they are still fresh and creative, and not when their minds are
already cluttered.
Always in a hurry
Not everybody can calm their minds and disconnect from the mental to-do
lists, but successful people can. They prefer to meditate and enjoy their
mornings, especially before a busy workday. Conversely, those who are always in
a hurry do not accomplish too many tasks and the day goes by without any
achievement whatsoever.
Ignore the good things that happen to them
Each day is a gift and should be treated accordingly. Ignoring the good
things that happen and taking them for granted is something a successful person
cannot conceive. Writing down the things you are grateful for is the best way
to appreciate your personal and professional success.
Have a disorganised schedule
Successful people hate being disorganised, so their mornings are always
planned ahead. This time management tool keeps them on track when they are too
involved in their chores and helps them prioritize and set the day’s
trajectory. Failing to do so will result in a professional disaster.
Ignore the calls, emails and news
Some people simply want to have a quiet morning, but successful persons
know that after spending time with their loved ones, exercising and mapping out
the day, there is always enough time to check their emails, calls, read the
news and stay informed.
