Insecure people may go through extra measures to
hide their lack of confidence. However, insecurity can still show through body
language.
Body language is one way to spot the real feelings or thoughts of a person.
You may express emotions more subtly through your non-verbal communication
because culture or character does not permit you to show feelings publicly. You
may also hide emotions that are potentially embarrassing. However, one can
still easily spot signs of apprehension by keenly observing facial expressions,
eye contact, posture, and other mannerisms. Here are some telling signs of
insecurity:
Lack of eye contact
People who lack confidence find it difficult to maintain eye contact.
Instead of looking straight at a person you’re talking to, you might opt to
look down or across the room. You might even avoid eye contact altogether.
Facial expressions
Other sure signs of insecurity are looks of uneasiness or discomfort on
your face coupled with hesitating verbal language. You may also chew on your
lower lip subconsciously.
Hand movements
An observant spectator may notice that while a public speaker’s voice may
sound confident, his hands will be otherwise trembling. You’ve probably even
experienced this yourself when in high pressure situations. Other signs are
fidgeting or playing around with a pen, a wristwatch you’re wearing, or other
objects near you.
Slouching
Poor body posture is another indicator of insecurity. If you’re feeling a
bit under the weather and unsure about yourself, you may show this by slouching
slightly.
Dead fish handshake
Self-assurance will reflect with a strong, firm handshake. Meanwhile, shy
or insecure people will sort of not quite shake your hand. The contact also
feels soft and clammy like a dead fish.
Overly firm handshake
On the other hand, you may also try to cover insecurity with an overly firm
handshake.
Laughter
Another insecurity giveaway is your laugh. Nervous laughter, high pitched
laughter, and fake laughter (as if the person is trying too hard to seem happy)
can all show that you’re feeling pangs of self-doubt.
Hiding
You may have done this when you were little. Hiding behind a parent or a
piece of furniture shows that you’re seeking refuge and protection. You use
these artificial barriers make you feel more secure.
Folding your arms
There are many variations of folding your arms – it may tight or loose,
with clenched fists, under your arm pits, hidden or revealed, and so on. But
they may all indicate defensiveness or insecurity. Hugging yourself
subconsciously shows that you want to protect vulnerable parts like your heart
and lungs. It helps give you feelings of control and protection when a
situation makes us feel unsafe. Of course, sometimes, a person is just folding
his arms because he’s feeling cold.
Crossing the legs
This body language may be a subtle way of hiding insecure feelings. It may
also mean that you’re holding something back. Take note though that this may
also be a tendency for girls who were taught early on that crossed legs are
ladylike.
